The fetishism of commodities is a term used by Marx explaining the social attraction focused around the products of trade or commerce. I really love Hannah Dyer. There are lots of Hannahs out there but I suppose you could say she is a ‘fetishised’ item. I could have any Hannah I wanted but I choose this one because, although she holds no intrinsic value (although she does a bit) I really want her instead of any of the others. As Marx said, it’s not God that makes you who you are, it’s society and individual choices. In today’s society and my own individual choice to choose this particular Hannah, my life is much brighter than I ever could have wished.

As Michael Maynard once said “Advertisement is the poetry of Capitalism” and one could say that Hannah Dyer advertises herself well through Facebook and her general personal brilliance. However, according to the wise Orwell, “Advertisement is the rattling of a stick inside a swill bucket”, although the preferred reading of this quote is negative, I see it as nothing but a movement within a society that is already corrupted by bad advertisement. (Eg. bad people advertising themselves).
